My love of citrus goes a long way back.

When I say this, I mean, it was my first word.

Of course I can’t remember this, but my father used to tell this story with such delight at bed time that I couldn’t forget this fact about myself if I tried.

I can imagine it though, a little me sitting on the kitchen bench and my dad feeding me orange pieces saying slowly in his childish speak way ‘orange.’

I’m sure my uttering of the word was nowhere near his, but at least I can safely say right back to then I was 1. An independent child who didn’t spurt out mom or dad as my first word and 2. That I love citrus, a love that still produces a zest within me to gobble up oranges whenever I can.

Some friends gave us some oranges and I thought why not take that zest, that refreshing, good feeling and add some gin.

It’s a great way to start the weekend early.

Citrus Refresher
Roamingtaste
Serves 4

Ingredients:
2 cups fresh orange juice
2 limes
Tablespoon superfine/caster sugar
Handful of fresh mint
1/2 cup gin
Ice to serve

Directions:
Sieve the orange juice to ensure no pulp and place in a pourable bowl.

In another bowl place the limes, sugar and mint and squash with the end of a rolling pin to get as much juice as possible. You should get about 1/4 – 1/3 of a cup of juice.

Strain and pour into the orange juice.

Add the gin to the mixture.

Take a cocktail shaker (or two glasses where one fits snuggly inside the other) and add half a cup of ice and half a cup of the cocktail mixture and shake well.

Pour and serve.

There's nothing quite as delicious as fresh citrus and mint! I always find it funny that citrus is such a summery ingredient, yet it peaks in the winter here. I'm going to go pour myself a big glass of OJ now, thanks! :)

Your so right, winter is synonymous with citrus, but I very much think of it as a summer fruit. Enjoy the OJ :)
